Foyle seemed thoughtful as he re-entered the police car.

“Too early for Edgar Jocelyn,” he informed Duff. “I’m going to drop in on that social secretary dame, Mrs What’s-Her-Name.”

“Jowett,” supplied Duff.

“She might give us a line on this bunch we couldn’t get in any other way.”

Mrs Jowett’s office on 57th Street was spacious and sparely furnished in cool neutral colours. The only highlight was a copper bowl containing white chrysanthemums on her desk. Beside it was a photograph in a tortoise-shell frame showing a girl about fifteen or sixteen with a round, noticeably chubby face. Scrawled below it were the words:

To Mother from Janey.
